A MESSAGE FROM REV. TOM FURRER PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends and Supporters, Since the beginning of our work 22 years ago, we have employed a hybrid approach to medical care for economically vulnerable people in Nigeria. First, medical volunteers conducted mobile clinics. Second, we have built and run full-time medical clinics to provide a more comprehensive level of care than is possible in mobile clinics. Third, we have used our full-time clinics and staff and volunteers to conduct annual free medical missions to thousands of people every year. This newsletter will focus on our free medical mission and mobile clinics this past summer. We partnered with St. Thomas Clinic staff and FaithCare to conduct a five-day, free medical outreach for the urban poor in the Eleme District of Port Harcourt. Each morning a large crowd gathered to receive medical care. Thanks to the dedicated FaithCare team of surgeons and surgical nurses, an eye doctor and a dentist, we were able to offer a much higher level of care than our normal clinic staff is able to provide. Due to the heroic efforts of our volunteers and clinic staff, we were able to care for about 350 patients every day. The surgical team was able to perform 115 surgeries over the five days, including several complicated gynecological surgeries to remove large fibroid tumors. One young boy was suffering from a severe case of appendicitis and had his appendix removed.
