Most are subsistence farmers who generate income from the crops they transport on their heads or by bicycle to the Kateri market. The nearest hospital is more than 50 miles away. The Kateri Medical Clinic provides local medical services for the region’s 500,000 people. In addition to the 24 hour a day clinic with reliable water and electricity, a mobile medical van provides “bush” medical service two days a week.

COSTS OF PROVIDING MEDICAL CARE: |
In our daily clinics and mobile clinics, we charge a modest amount to patients for medical services and for medicine. This helps to cover the costs of medical care and medicine. Our goal is to move all of our clinics to self-sufficiency. We pay the full salary of all medical staff for the first five years of operation. Then we gradually reduce our contribution ovdr the next five years until the clinics are self-funding.
In 2017, Kateri Medical Services contributed $ 61,200 to Kateri and Iburu Clinics for medical staff and medicine. For the 13,840 people we served, that amounts to $ 4.42 per person. |
