Medical Outreach From St. Thomas Clinic, Eleme District in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. In 2019, Kateri Medical Services began our partnership with St. Thomas Clinic in the Eleme district of Port Harcourt. Dr. Olaniyi Olaobaju and his wife Kehinde had already purchased the land and renovated the building.
Kateri Medical Services raised funds in 2019 to purchase equipment for the diagnostic lab for the clinic. In 2020, our commitment is to purchase a van for mobile clinic outreach missions to rural villages which do not have any medical facilities. We also have committed to funding a full-time doctor to conduct the mobile clinics and to assist with outreach to the urban poor in Port Harcourt.

We have just purchased the van and St. Thomas Clinic has conducted its first mobile clinic. In this case the mobile clinic was done for the benefit of clergy families in the Anglican Diocese of Owerri in Imo State – adjacent to Rivers State where Port Harcourt is located. The outreach was run from March 16 to 20 at the Goshen Retreat Centre. This was the first “trail run” for mobile clinics which we intend to be an integral part of the work of St. Thomas Clinic. When the new doctor is hired, we will be conducting one outreach per month at various locations.

We also conduct mobile clinics at two of our other clinics in Kateri and Iburu. In fact, the work of Kateri Clinic began as a mobile clinic outreach for two years before the clinic was started. Dr. Adekunle Alao is the head of the Diocesan Medical Committee in Kaduna. He began the mobile clinics to reach underserved people in remote rural villages. Once he began this work, he saw the need for a “home base” in the remote area in which he was working. Kateri Clinic was started to provide a deeper level of care than was possible in the mobile clinics. Dr. Olaniyi was the head doctor at Kateri for five years and saw first hand how effective this combination of mobile clinics and a permanent clinic was. He hopes to replicate the same model at St. Thomas Clinic and surrounding villages.
